If you’re interested in booking the band for your event, engagement or other function, please do get in touch with us via email (secretary@honitonband.co.uk) or Facebook. We’ve put together the following frequently asked questions in response to some of the most common queries that we receive, but please don’t hesitate to ask us if you have a question that isn’t covered below!
I’d like to book the band. Where do I start?
Great! If you’re interested in having us play for you, please get in contact with us via the links above. The band’s email account is run by Sharon Dibsdall, the Secretary, while the Facebook page is run by Gill Muggeridge; either would be delighted to hear from you.
What kinds of events can you support?
The sky’s the limit, really: we’ve played at private and public functions, including weddings, church events, Remembrance services, and carol concerts. Most of our events fall into one of three categories: ceremonial events, where we play hymns or ceremonial music for around an hour as part of proceedings; fêtes, where we play ‘background music’ for two 45-minute sets; and concerts, which are typically compered and last for up to two hours; these often include solo items. If you think your event would fall into one of these three categories, please do mention this when you first get in touch, but don’t be afraid to ask if you’re not sure! We love working with people to make the events we do as unique as possible.
Can you provide a smaller number of players?
While most of our events are for the full band, we’re also happy to work with you to provide a smaller ensemble, including quartets or quintets, or individual instrumentalists. Please get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.
What will the band need?
For a full-band event, the band will provide around 20 players, including percussion, and we will typically need around 15m x 15m of space, ideally covered (and chairs, ideally without arms). It’s also important that the band are able to leave instrument cases somewhere separate. If the band is providing a smaller ensemble of players, this can be adjusted as appropriate. Most band members will arrive by private cars, and would appreciate information on where to park and (for players with larger instruments) easy vehicular access. Refreshments are always welcome, too, although definitely not a requirement!
Can the band play outdoors?
Yes! Brass bands don’t require amplification, which makes us an ideal choice for events where running electricity wouldn’t be practical. If we’re playing outdoors, it’s generally helpful to have a ‘wet-weather contingency’ in place for where the band should play, as well as (at a minimum) a sheltered area where the band can congregate beforehand and leave cases.
How much does the band charge?
Our prices vary according to the event, audience, and location. We aim to provide excellent value for money: individual players are not paid for their role in the band, and payment will support the running of the Band, covering costs including music and rehearsal facilities. We will always provide you with a quote (when requested) before the event.
